Year 5 celebrate European Day of Languages

Lesson: Languages

Class: Year 5 Year: 2022 - 2023

On the 26th September, European Day of Languages is celebrated, which aims to promote language learning and linguistic diversity. In Year 5, we learnt about the German language as we could make links to our current history topic: Anglo-Saxons and Vikings.

We started the day by exploring the history of European languages, then focussed on specific facts about Germany. We looked at Germany in atlases: locating main cities, towns and rivers as well as neighbouring countries and their national flag. After this, we learnt some useful german phrases, which enabled us to have mini conversations. We tried some German foods and finished celebrating our day by singing 'Frozen - Let it Go' in multiple languages (with subtitles of course)!
